Advancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Promoting Anti-racism, Gender Equity and Self-employment for African-descent Women and their Families in Saskatchewan

  Date/Length: January 2024 to June 2024.

Project Partners: The project “Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” was implemented by DoARC, in partnership with UCAS-ADPA, and the Conseil économique et coopératif de la
Saskatchewan (CECS)

Funding Agency: Government of Canada’s Canadian Heritage Program ($81,500)

Objectives

The project provided nine (9) knowledge mobilization workshops to train 17 participants, including participants of African-descent and other racialized groups, focusing on:

  • Human rights values, including gender equity
  • Anti-racism strategies and skills supporting reconciliation, diversity, equity and inclusion (R-DEI)
  • Entrepreneurship training focused on establishing human rights-based childcare services which promote R-DEI

The initiative aimed to enhance economic development for participants in Saskatchewan and Alberta by developing operational plans and budgets for new daycare businesses, promoting policies that support reconciliation, diversity, equity, and inclusion while encouraging multilingual programs in daycare settings.

The project also partnered with two daycare operators: the Gardarie Zazie Daycare (French-speaking) in Regina and Center Life Christian Daycare in Saskatoon, to provide mentorship and support for participants.

Outcomes achieved

Participant evaluations indicated significant increases in knowledge and awareness and in the participants’ ability to act on their new knowledge in a community, including:

  • Increased participant knowledge and awareness of Canada’s cultural diversity
  • Increase in participants’ level of knowledge and awareness of issues affecting full participation in society and the economy, related to culture, ethnicity and/or religion (including racism and discrimination)
  • Increase in participants’ capacity within communities to address racism and discrimination
  • Increase in participants’ level of knowledge of developing sound business plans for establishing their human rights-based childcare operations.
